The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have urged Americans to exercise their right to vote ahead of the forthcoming US election on 3 November.

Members of the royal family are banned from making political statements, but given that Meghan and Harry stepped down from their royal duties earlier this year they now have more freedom to talk about the issues they care about most.

“Every four years we are told the same thing, that this is the most important election of our lifetime,” said Meghan. “But this one is. When we vote, our values are put into action and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter, because you do and you deserve to be heard.”

The couple made the statement via a video as part of 2020 Time 100, Time’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. Harry commented that, while he can't vote in the US elections (in fact, he, as a former royal, has never been able to vote in any political races), it's important to only trust reputable news sources and to be mindful of where we consume our information.

“When the bad outweighs the good, for many, whether we realise it or not, it erodes our ability to have compassion and our ability to put ourself in someone else’s shoes. Because when one person buys into negativity online, the effects are felt exponentially. It’s time to not only reflect, but act,” he said. “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.”
