In a special recorded message this morning (13 May), the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge called on the nation to "lift someone out of loneliness" in support of Mental Health Awareness Week.

The broadcast was played on every radio station in the UK at 11am to honour the 2022 Mental Health Minute, where the Duke & Duchess encouraged the nation to support those around them who might be experiencing loneliness with acts as simple as sending them a text or inviting them for a cup of tea.

"So if you think someone you know may be feeling lonely, just give them a ring, send them a text or knock on their door," said Kate, while William added: "Maybe suggest meeting for a cup of tea or a walk"

"Because these small acts of kindness can make a big difference and help us all feel less lonely," Kate added.

This year's Mental Health Minute was in support of Better Health - Every Mind Matters which offers advice to tackle loneliness and provides NHS-approved tips to help people look after their mental wellbeing.

In a picture released to accompany the broadcast, the Duke & Duchess can be seen recording the message - with Kate wearing a blue printed midi dress and William beside her in a suit.

The Minister for Civil Society and Youth Nigel Huddleston at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are great champions of mental health awareness and we’re hugely grateful to have their support through the Mental Health Minute. We know loneliness is having a disproportionate impact on our young people and this campaign offers easy to use guidance people can follow to improve their wellbeing."

The Mental Health Minute recording comes after the release of new Community Life Survey data that revealed loneliness is highest for young people aged 16-24, making them the loneliest of all age groups, with 11% of young people more likely to feel lonely often or always compared to every other age group (3-7%).
