The Duchess of Cambridge doesn’t often follow trends: after all, she has to find a way to wearing timeless ensembles that will still look good in 50 years time (no easy feat). But last night, she worked one of the hottest trends of the season - the cold-shoulder.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the theme, it’s what it says on the tin. A dress or top that exposes the shoulders, leaving them, the majority of the time at least, chilly. It’s very now.

Kate gave the trend a whirl at the 40th anniversary dinner for SportsAid, one of the many charities she supports. Her royal blue form-fitting dress, by Roland Mouret, featured a V-neck and skimmed the floor as she walked. It’s not a bespoke design: You can snap it up from luxury site MyTheresa - if you’ve got £2,095 spare.

She paired the dress with statement oval hoop earrings, strappy black sandals and a boxy black clutch.

While this is the first time the Duchess has tried her hand at the cold-shoulder trend, it’s not the first time she’s worn Roland Mouret. Clearly a fan of the British high-end brand, she wore the ‘Lombard’ gown to a dinner hosted by The Thirty Club at Claridges in 2012 and another cream, floor-skimming number to the ‘Mandela: long walk to freedom’ film premiere in London in December 2013.

It’s also by no means the first time the mum-of-two has proved her sartorial prowess. Her wardrobe includes a whole array of lust-worthy luxe labels, including Dolce & Gabbana, Erdem and Alexander McQueen, and let’s not forget her recent Vogue appearance. You can’t get more style-savvy than that.
