Creating a beauty look that sits and lasts well on dry skin is largely achieved in the skin prep.
Before you go anywhere near your make-up, give your skin a drink.
This will prevent it absorbing moisture from your make-up, and avoid it going patchy through the day.
Hyaluronic acid is the best ingredient to do this, as it is designed to retain moisture.
It works best applied to slightly damp skin when you wash your face in the morning.

Best moisturiser for dry skin
Following this, I always veer towards a moisturiser full of ceramides when working with dry skin.
Ceramides are there to help repair your skin’s barrier – if your skin were layers of bread in a sandwich, ceramides are the butter.
This moisturiser from CeraVe is very hydrating but fairly thin in texture, so you get all of the hydration without it feeling too thick under your make-up.

Best foundation for dry skin
Now for your make-up. To keep everything looking fresh and well, I’d recommend using cream or liquid foundations.
This L’Oreal Paris foundation is a little harder to find as it is exclusive to Amazon, but it teams a fresh glow with a medium coverage, helping you to look flawless and, at the same time, barely made-up.
Something hydrating like this will sit more easily on dry areas in the skin.

How to apply make-up to dry skin
If you’re especially dry, you may wish to rethink your application technique.
A dampened Beauty Blender will help to push product onto the skin rather than rubbing it around and potentially causing dry patches to peel away.
Sponges will absorb more product as a general rule, so tread with caution and be mindful it might mean your foundation runs out a bit sooner than you would have hoped.
Bronze and blush
Keep the cream theme going to add colour to your skin.
Max Factor Miracle Touch Second Skin Hydrating Foundation with SPF 20 | £12.99 from Boots
A light coverage foundation a few shades deeper than your complexion will work well as a bronzer – I love the Max Factor Miracle Skin Tint.
For blush, pressing a touch of Glossier Cloud Paint into the skin using your middle finger will give a gentle flush of colour.

Highlight and set your make-up
And as for Illuminators, this is where you have to make a judgement call.
Bear in mind that illuminators are going to highlight the skin underneath.
If you’re especially dry, avoid anything shimmering as it will draw attention to dry patches.
If you do wish to add a touch of glow, Becca is always my first choice as they have a wide variety of shades and textures, and their liquids are featherlight with a maximum colour pay off.

Finally, remember the importance of your skincare, and seal everything in with a hydrating mist.
Not only will this enhance the longevity of your make-up, it will continue to keep your skin hydrated, meaning it won’t absorb the moisture from your complexion product.
