Pass The Pinot: Government Says It’s OK To Drink Alcohol In Moderation

Drinking in moderation is no more dangerous than driving a car, the government will say in new alcohol consumption guidelines.

The incoming guidelines will be published within the next few weeks and appear to contradict previous advice issued by the country’s most senior doctor.

Earlier this year, Professor Dame Sally Davies, the chief medical officer, said that she thought about the increased risk of breast cancer every time she reached for a glass of wine.

However, a new document from health secretary Jeremy Hunt will state that moderate drinking poses no greater risk than driving a car.

It will say the health risk from moderate drinking is “very small”.

At the beginning of this year, the recommended weekly alcohol limit was changed to 14 units for men and women, reducing the limit for men by seven units.

But now the government is set to adopt a more relaxed approach to moderate drinking.

The Portman Group, which promotes responsible drinking, told The Sunday Times: “Responsible drinking carries a level of risk no greater than numerous other day-to-day activities and can be part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.”

A government source told The Sunday Times: “We think the new guidelines are based on good science.

“But we had always wanted to present the idea of drinking alcohol at relatively sensible levels as about people’s tolerance of risk.

“Up to the limits we’re advising, the level of risk is probably something people would accept.”
