This drink is the saviour of British mornings with over 50 million cups downed before 9am
For many of us, the first thing we do in the morning is stick the kettle on, especially when the weather is horrible outside. As this is part of our daily routine, we may not think too much of it. However, new research has revealed that collectively, Brits consume a whopping 53 million cups of tea each morning before 9am.
The study reveals that over half of Brits admitted that they cannot start the day properly without a warm cup of tea, with 12 per cent saying that they instantly start their day with a cuppa as soon as they drag themselves out of bed.
The most popular type of tea to have in the morning was a builder's tea (52%), which consists of black tea, milk and sugar. This was followed by 16 per cent of people preferring straight black tea, and 10 per cent choosing green tea. All these cuppas combined amounts to an overwhelming 2,682 million gallons of tea - the equivalent of four Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The Mirror reports that 59 per cent of Brit's can't begin their day without a cup of tea, while two thirds of people have confessed that they rarely or never miss out on their morning cuppa. It has also been revealed that there seems to be a sensible reason behind the nation's tea-loving.
A staggering 78 per cent of Brits have claimed that a proper brew gives them a little morning boost, setting a good tone for the rest of the day. Two thirds have also linked drinking tea with increased productivity.
The research, commissioned by PG Tips, showed that over a third of people feel more alert and refreshed after a morning tea and have confessed that they feel flat and tired if they miss out on it. For this reason, Eleanor Barker from Lipton has hailed it as 'the hero of British mornings'.
Brits are also willing to skip parts of their usual morning routines in order to make sure they have their morning brew. 37 per cent of people are happy to skip checking the news to make a cuppa, while 35 per cent will choose to leave their bed a mess if it means they can squeeze in a quick spot of tea.
Slightly more gross is that one in 10 Brits admitted that they would even skip brushing their teeth just to enjoy the hot beverage, according to the survey.
Tea isn't just a morning drink though, as 41 per cent of participants also said that they depend on tea throughout the day. Many said that they use it as a reset button to regain focus for their next task or activity.
No matter if you are a tea drinker or not, the survey shows that Brits will spend an average of nine minutes each morning to savour a cuppa, with 59 per cent choosing to take their time and enjoy their brew to the fullest.
