How to Dress Like a Literal Barbie at the Movie Theater This Weekend
The Barbiecore phenomenon that has been taking over social media feeds, department stores, billboards and more over the last couple of years has finally reached its ultimate form: the actual release of the "Barbie" movie.
With the help of countless cast press appearances and product collaborations, Barbie content continues to dominate our lives. Of course, some of it has been excellent — especially Andrew Mukamal and Margot Robbie's dedication to recreating nostalgic Barbie looks. As a result, Barbies and Kens everywhere are looking for ways to emulate their favorite dolls.
According to statistics from the discovery and shopping app Pinterest, searches for Barbie-related phrases have increased dramatically in the last year. The term "Barbie theme outfit" has surged 485% and "hot pink vest outfit" (a nod to one of Robbie's costumes) increased by 425% from May 2022 (shortly after the first teaser trailer was released) to May 2023.
Though there are plenty of brands teaming up with the Mattel subsidiary in anticipation of the film's theater debut (Gap, Zara, Balmain, Crocs and Kendra Scott — just to name a few), others are cashing in on the spectacle independently, spotlighting all things pink in their storefronts without inking official deals.
On example of the latter is Good American. Co-founder and CEO Emma Grede tells Fashionista, "After seeing such a huge success following the first iteration of our Pop Off Pink collection, we were thrilled to bring it back, just in time for all of the Barbiecore craze."
With the movie officially coming to theaters this Friday, July 21, it's time to plan your own own unabashedly bold Barbie outfits. And we're not talking about throwing on something pink and calling it a day. While it's unlikely anyone will out-do Robbie's stitch-for-stitch remakes of Barbie's greatest looks, it certainly doesn't hurt to try.
'I Can Be Race Car Driver' Barbie
If princess gowns and red-carpet attire isn't your idea of a comfortable movie theater outfit, raiding Race Car Barbie's closet is a good way to go. Be both a race car driver and the epitome of casual cool with vibrant cargo pants, subtle nods to the racetrack and, of course, a need for speed.

'I Can Be President' Barbie
Before Issa Rae played President Barbie in the new film, there was another political figure in the dollhouse, "I Can Be President Barbie." The doll first 'ran' for office in 1992, and has been 'running' every year since. In 2016, Barbie came out with its first all-female ticket, including a President and Vice President doll. You too can embody the confidence of a policy-making Barbie in a perfectly pink suit, accessorized with a Barbieland pin to show your patriotism, of course.

'Traveling to the Beach' Barbie
Summer isn't over yet! This "Extra Fly" Barbie comes with everything needed to make the movie theater (and beach) your own personal runway show. Just remember to take off your oversized sun hat so you don't block any other Barbies' views during the film.

'Western Movie' Barbie
If you're looking to match not just your personal Barbie doll, but also Barbie in the film, look no further than one of Robbie's very own dolls. Another monochromatic pink look never hurt anybody, and a sparkling cowboy hat with rhinestone fringe certainly hasn't either.

'Brooklyn Stylist' Barbie
Barbie, like many others, moved to New York to pursue her fashion dreams. But a measuring tape as a scarf might not be the most comfortable accessory, so Off-White's yellow tape belt might do the trick. Any good stylist also keeps a kit in her bag, so think about packing a needle and thread in case other Barbies need a hand.

'Tennis Career' Barbie
Fresh off the Wimbledon courts and straight to her local cinema, this Barbie is ready to serve. Skip the tennis balls in your pockets and stash your favorite snacks in for the film.
