Downton Abbey's Lily James is making her return to the West End in a limited run.

The actress, who previously appeared on the stage in All About Eve, has landed a co-starring role opposite Kristin Scott Thomas in playwright Penelope Skinner's newest production Lyonesse.

Tickets will be going on sale via LOVEtheatre at 12pm on Thursday (June 29), with pricing to be announced, for a 10-week limited stint at the Harold Pinter Theatre from October 17.

The project is a reunion for Kristin Scott Thomas and director Ian Rickson following their award-winning adaptation of Chekhov's The Seagull, which ran in both the West End and Broadway in 2008.

Lyonesse is an enigmatic story of a long-retired movie star, Elaine (Scott Thomas), who abruptly ends her decades-long retirement by inviting a young film executive, Kate (James), to her home in Cornwall to plot her comeback, via The Evening Standard.

"I have always wanted to work with Ian Rickson,” Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again star Lily said of her return to the stage. “When I received Penelope Skinner’s brilliant play, I read it in one sitting and adored it – I was utterly gripped by these strong, original characters.

"To work with [production company] Sonia Friedman again is an absolute dream but most importantly, I am so happy to be reunited with my friend, Kristin Scott Thomas."

Kristin added: "Working with Ian is one of the great joys of my professional life. And a new play is such an adventure. Penelope Skinner’s writing had me gripped from the first page. I love the questions the story raises."

Kristin Scott Thomas has had an esteemed theatre career, having won an Olivier Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Seagull. She has been nominated for the prestigious theatre award four other times, most recently in 2015 for playing the title role in Sophocles's Electra.
