Don't Forget About All the Other Harvey Weinsteins
The Harvey Weinstein scandal-the allegations of sexual assault and harassment only recently brought to light (but dating back for decades)-has dominated every corner of the media, subsuming even Trump's latest tweets. Part of the reason we're still talking about Harvey Weinstein is because he is one of the most powerful players in Hollywood and his victims are celebrities. We know them; they are in the movies and TV shows we love and watch over and over again.
But what about the victims we don't know? Worse-what about their not-at-all-famous bosses who aren't held up to to public scrutiny?
Seventy-five percent of women who experience sexual harassment in the workplace do not report it. And those that do, fare little better. Of the 6,822 sexual harassment allegations the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) investigated in 2015 alone, only forty-eight percent resulted in any charges. How many of these women have followed the Weinstein story with mixed emotions: Frustrated that their own tormentors have gone unpunished, shame that they did not step forward sooner, despair that anything will change.
There are thousands of Harvey Weinsteins out there. They may not be millionaires, or run Hollywood studios or count Hillary Clinton as friends, but they are just as reprehensible. And for each one, there may be untold victims. Celebrity or not, these victims deserve our attention and support.
In the past few weeks alone, dozens of allegations of sexual harassment of all kinds have been published in the news without causing much of a stir outside of their communities. These are just the tip of the iceberg-for each reported case of alleged sexual harassment, there are doubtless dozens of others-but they're a good place to start.
Below is an incomplete list of claims of sexual harassment that have come to light over the past month. While it's important to note that many of these allegations are unproven as of now, they should be taken seriously.
The conversation around sexual harassment in the workplace should not die out with the Harvey Weinstein news cycle.
