Dolce & Gabbana Paid Tribute to the Cool Girl at Milan Fashion Week
Whither the model off-duty? Circa the early 2010s, she was everywhere: smudged eyeliner, low-slung boyfriend jeans, beanie, studded ankle boots. As street style became a global phenomenon, models hustling from one show to another became the inspiration for countless stylish followers. Today, much of that sartorial fascination has shifted over to social media stars, but today at Milan Fashion Week, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana reminded us of the original influencers with their “cool girl”-inspired fall/winter 2025 show.
As a culture, we’ve been so eager to append “hot girl” to anything and everything that we’ve almost forgotten about the power of cool. It’s hard to define, but, as they say, you know it when you see it, and it helped that the casting included so many women who fit the bill. The show opened with a video of one-time ELLE cover star and bona fide cool girl Vittoria Ceretti going about her day. Then, a stream of models, including Amelia Gray and Irina Shayk, strutted onto the runway, proceeding out into the streets of Milan, where crowds were watching and cheering while Måneskin’s Victoria De Angelis DJ’ed.
The looks were all model-off-duty insouciance: baggy cargo pants, leather coats, oversized jerseys, over-the-knee boots, and ripped denim. But since this was a Dolce show, there was of course a Sicilian spin, with black lace, lingerie elements, leopard prints, and molto embellishments.
The parade of glamazons in oversized sunglasses gave way to an eveningwear-themed finale that proved the 1920s revival continues apace. Think: fringed flapper dresses, transparent gowns over minimalist lingerie, bejeweled minis, and feathered skirts with mesh tops. The flappers joined their model pals outside, and the whole thing ended with a dance party, Italian-style.
