Owners are urged to keep their dogs on leads as Storm Éowyn batters the UK with winds up to 90 mph.

The Met Office has warned that dogs could be 'swept away' by powerful waves crashing on land in coastal regions.

"If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead," a statement said.

A red weather warning is in place for the whole of the Republic of Ireland, with more than 560,000 homes and businesses without power.

Meanwhile, the south coast of England, parts of the southwest and the Welsh coast are covered by a yellow weather warning for strong winds.

Flights have been cancelled, schools are shut and millions have been urged to stay home during the storm.

An expert from Vets Now is also encouraging dog owners to take the advice seriously and avoid walking pets in those affected areas.

"Skipping a routine dog walk whilst extreme weather warnings are in place may mean that dogs and puppies can't get their daily dose of exercise, but it's the far safer option to avoid accidents and emergencies," says Sadie Spencer, Principal Vet.

"The Met Office advice for staying safe during a storm is to stay indoors as much as possible and we can't emphasise enough that this is the safest option for your pets too."

Storms can commonly leave dogs fear-stricken and anxious. Keep your pets calm by distracting them with indoor games and activities, like toys filled with food to give them an energy boost. You may also want to keep the radio or TV on to mask any heavy storm sounds.

"Distract dogs or young puppies from the storm outside by engaging in indoor playtime with them," adds Sadie.

"Play with their favourite toys, such as a tug toy, or practice training. Keeping their attention focused on you can help dogs to feel calmer. Your presence is often the best reassurance your pet can have."
