A major theme of the 67th Annual Grammy Awards was a celebration of musicians finally recieving their flowers. From Beyoncé being awarded Album Of The Year for the first time to Charli XCX being recognised for BRAT's influence and Lady Gaga giving her support and flowers to the trans community, it was a night of well-deserved recognition.

Among the stars was rapper and singer, Doechii, who made waves with multiple nominations: Best Rap Performance for her single 'Nissan Altima', Best New Artist and a win for Best Rap Album for her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal — a notoriously difficult category for women to break into it, let alone win. Since the category's introduction in 1989, only two women have ever won the award — until now.

'[Only] two women have won,' Doechii began her acceptance speech, before correcting herself, 'Three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B and Doechii.'

While at the podium, Doechii delivered a powerful message, 'I know there is some Black girl out there [watching,] and I want to tell you that you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes onto you. You are exactly who you need to be where you are, and I am a testimony to that,' she said.

The moment felt especially meaningful given a five-year-old video resurfacing online, where Doechii shared that she had quit her job to pursue music.

She also took time to express gratitude to God, crediting her faith with guiding her success, 'I put my heart and soul into this mixtape,' she said. I bared my life, I went through so much, I dedicated myself to sobriety and God told me that I would be rewarded and that he would show me, just how good it can get.'

Earlier in the evening, Doechii performed two of her songs 'Catfish' and fan-favourite 'Denial Is A River', earning a standing ovation from the crowd, including cheers from Billie Eilish, SZA and Jay Z, which has been quickly went viral on social media.

Although Doechii first emerged in 2019, her meteoric rise in 2024 was solidified with the release of Alligator Bites Never Heal. Live performances, like her Tiny Desk Concert and a medley of Denial Is A River and Boiled Peanuts on The Late with Stephen Colbert Show, showcased her status as a show-stopping performer with hard-hitting bars and captivating melodies.

As the night concluded, Doechii surprised fans with the release of a new single 'Nosebleeds', in which she references her Grammy win with the line, 'Everybody wanted to know what Doechii would do if she didn't win,' and she quips, 'I guess we'll never know'.
