One company is using their technological know-how to create some truly amazing prosthetic limbs for disabled children. The startup, Open Bionics, makes affordable 3D printed hands for amputees and has just announced a new line for children – Disney-themed bionic hands.

Including designs influenced by some of the top family films of the last couple of years, children will be able to wear prosthetic arms inspired by the likes of “Iron Man”, “Frozen” and “Star Wars” – including an Elsa-inspired hand or Iron Man’s glove.

But the life-changing bionic limbs don’t just look great, they’re fully functional too and come with a couple of additional magical benefits. Iron Man’s glove, for example, comes complete with a vibration action to simulate a rocket launching. Epic, right?

Open Bionics teamed up with Disney as part of the latter’s Accelerator progamme and Disney provided the licenses needed to make the character-themed hands free. The creative team even volunteered their skills and time at no cost to Open Bionics – which is how the bionic limbs can be sold at such a low price.

The 3D-printed hands will set US families back just over £300 (a fraction of what such technological-advanced products like these would usually cost) and will be available to buy next year.

“The power of these prosthetics is that the public perception is completely different,” Open Bionics told the Independent.

“All of a sudden they’re not being asked how they lost their hand, they’re being asked where they got their cool robot hand, how does it feel, and how does it work? It completely flips the perception 180 degrees. What might have been perceived as their greatest weakness is seen as their greatest strength.”
