Disney+ sets release date for new Beatles documentary
Disney+ has announced the release date for Martin Scorsese's new Beatles documentary.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker is producing Beatles ’64, with its release now set for Disney's streaming service on 29th November 2024.
David Tedeschi is directing the project, after previously collaborating with Scorsese on rock music documentaries Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese for Netflix and the David Johansen concert special Personality Crisis: One Night Only.
In Beatles ’64, the pair reflect on the Fab Four's first trip to the US, where they made television history with their live set on The Ed Sullivan Show in front of 73 million viewers.
The official synopsis reads: "On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived in New York City to unprecedented excitement and hysteria. From the instant they landed at Kennedy Airport, met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country.
"Their thrilling debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show captivated more than 73 million viewers, the most watched television event of its time. Beatles ’64 presents the spectacle, but also tells a more intimate behind the scenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George, and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame."
Scorsese and Tedeschi have recorded new interviews with the living Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as super-fans of the group. The film also makes use of archival footage filmed by documentarians Albert and David Maysles in 1964.
This will be the latest in a series of projects about The Beatles to stream exclusively on Disney+. In 2022, Peter Jackson teamed up with the streamer on a three-part documentary series, The Beatles: Get Back, about the group's final days in the recording studio.
Earlier this year, Jackson restored the 1970 documentary Let It Be for Disney+, featuring footage of The Beatles' iconic rooftop concert at 3 Savile Row.
Beatles ’64 premieres on November 29, 2024 on Disney+.
