Did Emily Ratajkowski Just Bring Back The Divisive Dress Over Trousers Trend?

There are a few fashion trends that are best left firmly in the past: patchwork 'peasant' skirts, super-low-rise jeans, arm warmers, velour tracksuits, head-to-toe Ed Hardy, and hotpants with UGGs, to name but a few. So, essentially, most of the questionable looks that were big in the Nineties and Noughties.

Until recently, layering a skirt over trousers was among said Noughties style relics. Then along came Alaïa, Bottega Veneta, Courrèges and Chopova Lowena, who put the look back on the map with their recent runway shows, and suddenly, the once-divisive look is everywhere – including on Emily Ratajkowski.

The model and actor attended the launch party celebration for Puma's Speedcat trainers in Milan earlier this week, and wore a mini-dress over trousers for the occasion.

Ratajkowski put a sultry twist on the controversial Y2K trend by layering a sheer black mini-dress that plunged all the way down past her navel over flared black trousers. She finished the look with sporty black and white Speedcats, a brown leather shoulder bag, a cord necklace with a large silver pendant, and classic hoop earrings.

Styled this way, suddenly a skirt over trousers doesn't seem quite so controversial anymore – rather, it seems like a great way to bring a super-sultry dress back down to earth for a more casual occasion. We're sold.
