A Designer Brings Park Avenue Sensibility to a Sprawling Waterfront Residence on Long Island
New York-based interior designer Amy Kalikow’s design philosophy is centered around her clients. Her belief is that each space should reflect the personalities and lifestyles of its residents. So when a young family tapped Kalikow to help design their forever home in Sands Point, a small waterfront village on the North Shore of Long Island, Kalikow helped the family discover their design personality.
“Their vision for their home was very traditional, and I like to have fun in my rooms,” Kalikow tells Robb Report. “Ultimately, we worked together to create this family’s forever home with elements more ‘of the moment.’ The challenge was to create something super chic but livable, because the family are big entertainers.”

The 20,000-square-foot newly built home is positioned at the end of a private cul-de-sac and perched directly on the beach with sweeping views of Manhasset Bay. There are five bedrooms and nine bathrooms, oversized living spaces, a wood-paneled library, and several areas that blur the lines between indoors and outdoors. Kalikow worked alongside Mitchell Wilk Architecture PC and Zarabi Design and Development to bring the home to life.
From the formal living room to the stunning bedrooms brimming with personal details to the second-floor circular office with water views, no detail was left to chance. The family was inspired by the refined and sophisticated homes on Park Avenue, and Kalikow honored this while adding some custom touches. The home is awash in neutral hues, predominantly a milky white, with gorgeous textures and artful lighting and decor.
Kalikow honored the family’s vision of having an elegant and refined space without anything being too trendy but tweaked some of the original design elements. For example, she widened the wall panels and made some of the trimwork smaller and cleaner, as well as picked out custom lighting fixtures that give the home a bespoke feel.
The family loves to spend time together and with guests, so Kalikow ensured that the home’s gathering spots are ample in size with an easy relationship to each other. “The dining room feeds seamlessly into the living room and into a bar area at the other end,” she says. “The library is where they have the piano and play piano and watch sports.”
There’s a traditional yet elegant Christopher Peacock kitchen with a massive eat-in island, wood beams across the ceilings, and handcrafted white cabinetry. The kitchen also features a breakfast nook with a built-in banquette, complete with a small window to let in natural light. Bedrooms are filtered throughout the home and feature pastel color palettes, arched ceilings, large windows, and custom headboards and drapery. The colors mimic those of the ocean beyond. Meanwhile, another guest bedroom is cloud-like with sumptuous bedding and patterned wallpaper.
The main level connects to a stone-lined patio that runs nearly the entire length of the home. The covered terrace has outdoor dining tables, an outdoor living room with a fireplace, and an ocean-facing terrace drenched in sunlight. Other amenities include a gym, sauna, and an office on the top floor. Lined with wood paneling, the office is located in one of the home’s turrets and has sweeping water vistas. There’s plenty of manicured lawn space, as well as a pool and pool deck.
