If you’re not into fashion, the name ‘Derek Blasberg’ may mean little to nothing to you. But, catch a glimpse of his grin on Instagram and chances are you’ll know he is.
Seemingly best friends with every celebrity on the planet (think Kendall Jenner, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Chastain), Blasberg has climbed his way to the top with his love of partying and penchant for talking about all things fun at all times.
So how did a man with a humble background crack his way into the world of the Hollywood elite?
The 35-year-old was born and raised in St Louis, Missouri, before making his way to New York. Once there, he found work at Elite Model Management, writing model biographies.
After a string of internships at the likes of Vogue, W and V magazine, Blasberg landed a job as an assistant to Vogue‘s managing editor at the time. He was swiftly fired after less than a year “for being the worst assistant in the world.” (His words.)
He then became resident party writer for various Vogue magazines as well as the late Style.com, attending anything he could get his hands on and trying to secure that elusive celebrity interview.
His charm and wit allowed him to earn the title of ‘male socialite’ as well as a whole host of famous friends.
Now, he is Vanity Fair‘s ‘Our Man on the Street’, a senior staff member at the Gagosian Gallery and host of a fashion news show on CNN. But despite his impressive CV, several people still don’t know exactly what it is that he does.
“When I first met him, I was a little dubious,” Gwyneth Paltrow famously told The Cut. “I was like, ‘Are you a professional best friend of celebrities? And why are you everywhere at once? What’s your deal?’ After 10 seconds, I fell completely in love with him.”
Blasberg’s won over Instagram, too, and has racked up almost 650,000 followers with his blend of travel and culture shots along with tons of intimate selfies with his A-list pals.
Here’s a small insight into the world of the man that every celebrity is dying to know.
