How to Deck Your Lids with Jewel-Tone Eyeshadow Like Salma Hayek Pinault and Nicole Richie

It's holiday makeup season, and the very best time to coordinate your eye makeup to your outfit with these expert tips

Tis’ the season to match your eyeshadow to your outfit.

And at the Baby2Baby Gala at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood on Nov. 11, where stars gathered to raise money for children living in poverty, Salma Hayek Pinault and Nicole Richie did just that with their makeup.

Hayek Pinault, who received the “Giving Tree Award” at the event, wore a custom Bottega Veneta gown in an eye-catching deep green shade.

Meanwhile, Baby2Baby Board Member Nicole Richie, who alongside sister Sofia Richie Grainge closed out the evening by introducing the gala’s special musical performer — Snoop Dogg — wore a burgundy velvet gown from the Alberta Ferretti Fall Winter 2023 Collection.

“Embrace the fun of color and get playful,” says Hayek Pinault’s makeup artist Sofia Schwarzkopf-Tilbury, who created her vibrant emerald look.

Agrees Richie’s makeup artist Mai Qyunh, “I love coordinating makeup to your outfit, and I especially love jewel tones on the eyes; it makes it more interesting compared to a traditional smoky eye.”

For a more modern monochromatic effect, Schwarzkopf-Tilbury adds, “Go for colors in the same family as your dress rather than searching for an exact match.”

Ahead, both pros break down how they created these jewel-tone looks.

“We loved the idea of creating a vibrant emerald eye look to complement Salma’s stunning Bottega Veneta gown for the Baby2Baby Gala. Everything from the hair, to the eyes, to the jewelry, to the lip, contributed to the green goddess aura we wanted to create,” Schwarzkopf-Tilbury says.

While the dress served as the inspiration, the pro shares the direction for the look was a collaboration with Hayek-Pinault.

“Salma is incredible with makeup and she always loves to get involved with the inspiration behind the look. Before we started glam, we spent time talking through makeup, hair and jewelry, and when we saw the color of the dress, we knew a smoky emerald eye was going to be perfect for the vibe she wanted.”

Playing off the deep green color and shimmer of the sequins, they applied emerald tones that would “make her eye color pop and complement the warmth of her complexion.”

To create this eye look, Schwarzkopf-Tilbury started with the Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Smokey Emerald cream eyeshadow stick “to lay down a foundation of color all over the lids.I then blended this out into a feline shape, creating a lift effect in the outer corners of the eyes with the help of my Charlotte Tilbury Eye Colour Magic Liner Duo in Green Lights.”

To finish, we added the same liner along the waterline for even more sultry definition, layered on plenty of Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! Mascara, and then pressed the sparkling Charlotte’s Hypnotising Pop Shots in Emerald Eyes on to the center of the lids to widen and brighten.”

Schwarzkopf-Tilbury shares two key tips to recreate the look.

“Something I do on all my celebrity clients is to use a palette of neutral mattes like the Super Nudes Easy Eye Palette to soften the outer corners of the eyes and add definition through the crease.”

And whatever you do, she says, “Don’t overdo the rest of your look. When working with bold color on the eyes or lips, keep the rest of the look fresh and natural to bring a cool, modern edge.”

Makeup artist Mai Quynh shares that she was “inspired by the velvet texture of Richie’s dress” to create this smoldering look.

For it, she says, “I started by smudging Sweed Eyeliner pencil in Margaux Bordeaux along her upper and lower lash lines. I smudged the liner on her lid, using it like an eyeshadow primer, then I faded it into her crease.”

Next, she applied Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad in Honeymoon. “I primarily used the two bottom shades on her lids and lash lines. I blended the top right color into the crease of her eyes, fading it up to the brows.”

Using the Ilia Gel Eyeliner in Dusk, Quynh says, “I rimmed the waterline of her eyes. Then I applied two coats of Lancôme Definicils Mascara in Black.”

Quynh shares her top tips for nailing this look. “Before applying powder eyeshadow, I always start with a cream eyeshadow or smudged eyeliner on the lids, instead of eyeshadow primer. Most primers are clear, so I prefer to use an eyeliner to give the shadow color more punch. It will keep your eyeshadow on longer and give more density to the shadow color.”

Tools are also important. “When applying eyeshadow, use a flat, stiff brush to pick up the shadow color. Then pat the color on the lid. I find most people will swipe the brush around on their lid and the color goes on unevenly as well as more sheer. Once you have your shadow laid down properly, use a fluffy blending brush to blur and blend edges of the shadow into the crease. Use a smaller liner brush to smudge shadow along the lash lines.”
