Death in Paradise star Josephine Jobert worried fans after posting a photo from a hospital bed on Wednesday 10 July in which she was attached to a pulse oximeter, a machine that is used for measuring oxygen levels.

She didn’t caption the image, but followed it on Thursday with a photo in which she confirmed it was her final day of filming on the drama series OPJ, so it is likely the hospital photo was actually a behind the scenes look at the series.

The French series centres around a police captain named Clarissa Hoarau, played by Yaelle Trules, who works in New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Josephine was filming a guest role in the latest series.

The French actress and singer is best known for her role in Death In Paradise where she played DS Florence Cassell. She joined the hit mystery show in 2015 at the beginning of the fourth season, alongside Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman.

Josephine left the series, which films for a large part of the year in Guadeloupe, doubling for the fictional Saint Marie, in 2019. In a video at the time, she explained her reasons for leaving the series: “I quit the show for personal and professional reasons,” she said. “Nothing dramatic, I swear, everything is fine. I’ve been working on Death in Paradise for five years and it has been an amazing experience working with brilliant actors, working with the English and the French crew. I loved every minute of it and I’m going to miss the show.”

Her final episode had Florence quitting her job and moving to Martinique following the death of her fiance Patrice.

“Saint Marie’s a small island, and I don’t think there’s anywhere here that doesn’t have a memory of Patrice in it,” she said.

However, Josephine and her character Florence did return to Death in Paradise for the 10th series, with the storyline having Florence coming back to work and getting to know her new boss Neville Parker, played by Ralf Little.

She remained until the fourth episode of series 11, but returned once more for the final episodes in series 13 that featured Ralf as the lead detective on the island. The series ended with Neville realising Florence was his true love, and the pair sailed away together for a new life that would hopefully be murder-free. Following the episode, Josephine confirmed she would not be returning to the show.

Actor Don Gilet, starring as DI Mervin Wilson, will take on the role of Death in Paradise’s main detective from this year’s Christmas special.
