Death in Paradise spoilers follow.

Death in Paradise star Ralf Little has spoken about his future on the show following the shocking twist in the latest episode.

In the penultimate episode of the twelfth series, Little’s DI Neville Parker was left reeling after his love interest Sophie Chambers was revealed to be a killer who had targeted him the whole time.

The vendetta stemmed from an incident back in the UK where Neville contributed to the arrest of Sophie’s sister, and she hatched a plan for vengeance by framing him for the murder of David Cartwright.

Little, who debuted in the ninth series, spoke to the RadioTimes about the shocking developments, and what the future holds for him and the character.

“He's really beating himself up and he's really in a bad place and frankly, he's not even sure anymore if he's up to the job,” he began. “That has ramifications for whether or not he is worthwhile to the team anymore.

“He’s desperately trying to come to terms with the betrayal and the emotional fallout from that. And on a professional level, he's really questioning his own abilities now,” he continued.

“He says at some point, 'I had a murderer living in my own house and I didn't see it. I didn't see any of it coming. I’m supposed to be a detective and I just let it all happen.’”

Though the current series is due to conclude next week, fans of the series won’t have to wait long to get another fix of crime-solving, with spin-off show Beyond Paradise set to kick off on the same night (24 February).

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press, producer Tony Jordan revealed he wanted the new series to forge its own identity before any notions of a crossover were considered.

“It's not just a little off-shoot of Death in Paradise and a little fluffy thing. We're keen to give those treats where we can, but it's equally important to us that the show stands on its own,” he said.

Death in Paradise series 12 airs on Friday nights on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer. A spin-off, Beyond Paradise, premieres on Friday, 24 February.
