DCC's Victoria on her life after the show – and her mental health
Fans of the Netflix docuseries America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will remember one stand out dancer, Victoria Kalina, who was praised after the show for speaking openly about her difficult relationship with body image, her eating disorder and depression – and how the pressure of the squad massively impacted her.
Viewers saw how, after four years, Victoria finally walked away from life as a DCC in order to focus in on her self, something that was no doubt a huge challenge given her mum, Tina, is a former DCC dancer too.
Now, in a new interview giving an update, Victoria has spoken about how moving to New York, to pursue a new dream of joining The Rockettes and to teach dance, has allowed her to heal.
"I'm just kind of embarrassed that I allowed myself to let the organization affect me that way," she told The Cut, when recalling her experience of watching the series back and seeing how 'puffy' her face looked after "a [food] binge episode".
She also opened up about taking antidepressants and starting therapy before embarking on her third year as a DCC, something she felt saw her viewed as weak.
"I almost felt like I was looked at as weak," Victoria said. "I felt like I was a rookie again. It was just like, 'Well, why am I starting from square one when I just went away to make myself better?'."
Now though, it sounds as though she's thriving in her new life in New York. "I feel like everything seems possible here!" she updates in the interview. "I feel like I’m fully me now."
Things we love to hear = this.
