It's been a long time coming, but the release date for No Time to Die is – genuinely – just around the corner. Being Daniel Craig's fifth and final portrayal of the suited-and-booted spy, there's been mounting speculation about which famous face will step into those slick black shoes next time around, with many fans floating the idea of a female Bond.

Critics, meanwhile, are adamant that Bond should be male – because flipping the character's gender wouldn't make sense in the context of the franchise; because there are better ways of improving representation on-screen, and so on. There's no shortage of internet discourse on the matter, but as far as the current 007 is concerned, the answer to the question "should a woman play Bond?" is a resounding "no". (continued below)

“The answer to that is very simple,” Craig told the Radio Times magazine. “There should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?” He has a point, we suppose. Whatever your personal thoughts on Craig's take may be, he's not the only member of the Bond universe to hold this view.

The producer of the film franchise, Barbara Broccoli, says it's unlikely that the role will ever be played by a woman. Ever. "I always feel that Bond is a male character, that is just a fact," she told Good Morning Britain in 2017. "We have to make movies about women and women's stories, but we have to create female characters – and not just turn a male character into a woman for a gimmick." The rumour mill continues to whirl.
