On Monday, Dame Judi Dench was revealed as the cover star of the June 2020 issue of British Vogue.

At 85-years-old, Dench is the oldest person ever to grace the cover of Vogue - making her appearance a historic one.

The British actor was photographed by Nick Knight for the cover wearing a vibrant floral Dolce & Gabbana ensemble with fresh, minimal make-up.

The understated beauty look was created by renowned make-up artist Val Garland, who has since outlined the products and techniques she used.

Unsurprisingly, there were no £200 anti-aging lotions or luxury full-coverage foundation included in the regime.

Instead, Garland opted for a more affordable approach, using several products that cost under £20.

Proving that you don’t need to break to the bank to look great at any age, here’s a rundown of every product that was used to create the cover-ready complexion.

Step 1: The plumping serum

To prep the skin, Garland started by massaging Dench’s skin, applying L’Oreal’s Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum.

Garland explains that massaging “is a great way of waking up your face and bringing blood to the surface.”

The affordable skin plumping serum includes 1.5% pure hyaluronic acid, which helps to re-plump wrinkles, as well as hydrate and smooth the skin.

Step 2: the foundation alternative

In order to create the natural look Garland ditched foundation in favour of two products: Dr Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Colour Correcting Treatment and L’Oreal’s Infallible More Than Concealer.

The Dr Jart+ colour corrector uses advanced Korean skin care technology to remove redness and rosacea.

Meanwhile, Garland is a big fan of the affordable concealer, saying: “What’s nice about this concealer is that you just spot it where you need it and, because it’s a long-lasting product, it just stays put.”

Step 3: The subtle blush

To give Dench a healthy rosy complexion Garland used a cream blush from Florence By Mills, the beauty brand created by Stranger Things star, Millie Bobby Brown.

The hue was also used on Dench’s lips, Garland explaining: “I used an apricot shade to bring a hint of colour to [Judi’s] lips and cheeks.”

Step 4: The hypoallergenic mascara

Did you know Dench is allergic to mascara? Us either.

Garland reveals: “She is very allergic to mascara – but she likes mascara – so I was a little bit scared because I didn’t want to be giving any sort of irritation to Dame Judi Dench!”

Due to Dench being sensitive to irritation Garland used La Roche-Posay’s hypoallergenic mascara, which she applied with a small fan brush. So if you have sensitive eyes, this gentle mascara could be the solution.
