Dakota Johnson Says She 'Basically Overdosed' On Caffeine While Directing Her First Film
Dakota Johnson has revealed that, on the set of her recent directorial debut, Loser Baby, she 'basically overdosed' on the heavily-caffeinated American energy drink, Celsius.
'I discovered Celsius on day one of filming the short and I didn’t know that it was like Red Bull, I thought it was, like, a natural drink,' Johnson told Variety. 'I was like, "I’m so inspired; I’m awake all night long; I’m not sleeping because I’m just thinking," and it’s because I was having like two Celsius a day — I thought it was vitamins.'

'I didn’t realise that I was basically just overdosing on caffeine,' she added, before explaining that it was only when the film's costume designer, Katie Workinger, alerted her to the drink's caffeine content that Johnson realised. She says Workinger told her, 'You’re basically having, like, four Red Bulls a day.'
'It was really upsetting, yeah, it was,' the actor said of the revelation. 'But now I know that in dire straits, there’s Celsius.'
In its guidance for the optimal daily fluid intake, the NHS recommends limiting caffeine to 200mg per day; one can of Celsius' energy drink contains 200 mg of caffeine. Celsius, which was founded in 2004, says the drink is 'not recommended for people sensitive to caffeine, children under the age of 18, or women who are pregnant or nursing.' Its packaging instructs customers to not exceed two servings per day.
Loser Baby, which is a 23-minute short film, follows a group of LA-based friends, led by actor Talia Bernstein, who also wrote the script. Bernstein’s character Lizzie is frustrated by the sexless plateau of her long-term relationship—a situation she bemoans to her best friend, played by Blake Lee, that reaches a kind of zenith at a birthday party for another friend, played by Ashley Madekwe.
