Our Curve Editor's 3 step guide to layering like a pro this season

So long ice coffees, and hello Pumpkin Spice lattes! Autumn is well underway, and with that comes the need for additional layers - a thought that should warm the hearts of many but can also cause an eyebrow raise, especially for my curvy and plus-size babes.

In an attempt to rebel against outdated fashion rules about what we 'should' and 'shouldn't' wear (you do you, folks), I'll be sharing the three layering techniques I love and make me feel my most confident in my own clothes. Whether you opt for a 'less is more' stance or prefer the joy that maximalism brings, layers are the best way to add depth and intrigue to an outfit that otherwise may verge on the edge of boring. And all it takes sometimes is the addition of a longline cardigan, oversized scarf or blazer.

1. Start with thin basics

Starting with lightweight pieces is crucial to creating a perfectly layered look. So, let's take full advantage of that summer wardrobe. Through on that dress, you didn't get enough wear out of, or pull on that crop top you couldn't help reaching for every morning, or better yet, wear those perfectly tailored shorts you thought would never see the light of day again.

The idea is to start with thin basics that you can easily layer on top of - because we all hate that uncomfortable feeling of layering and then feeling too restricted to even move our arms. So, put down the thick jumper for one moment.

Pro Tip: instead of wearing a turtle neck or white collared shirt, wear a 'dickie', otherwise known as a detachable collar. Perfect if you want to wear all the layers but not overheat.

2. Play with lengths

As cheesy as it sounds, fashion has the ability to empower all and help us show up in the world. And sometimes, fashion allows us to show up just a liiiittle taller too - thank you, heels! But if the possibility of sore feet at the end of a long day isn't for you, layering might just come in handy. Because, the truth is, finding the right balance of proportions can elongate your body or accentuate your shape.

If, like me, you want to elongate your body, layering your dress with a cropped blazer or cardigan is ideal. Not only does this technique create shape by drawing attention to your waist, but it will also help to create the illusion that you're taller. So long heels, we don't need you anymore!

But if the idea of a cropped jacket doesn't get you excited in the way a longline outwear piece does, Simi from @simimoonlight is a great example of how you can pull off this look. As long as the style of dress or even the top and jeans you wear underneath the outerwear piece hugs your figure, you'll look incredible.

3. Elevate with accessories

Now it's time to elevate the look, and you can do that with accessories. Rather than wearing your usual black tights with your skirts or shorts this season, switch them for a fun print to add more depth to the outfit. If you dislike tights, that's also a-okay, just add some drama with some thigh-high or knee-high boots.

Oversized scarves are another way to have fun with layering this season; whether you opt for colour or print, tying a scarf around your neck or layering one over your shoulders is a beautiful way to transform your look.

However you decide to dress this autumn, have fun with it. Fashion doesn't have to be serious. So wear the things you want to wear, and wear them proudly!
