The Crown should carry fiction warning

From Harper's BAZAAR

The British culture secretary has urged Netflix to make it clearer that The Crown is a work of fiction. Oliver Dowden says he plans on writing to the streaming service this week to express his concerns.

The popular series has attracted criticism from senior royals over its "cruel and unfair" portrayal of the events that led to the marriage breakdown of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Some sources close to the royals say that the shows is full of inaccuracies, while others - including Diana's former butler - have argued that it is a largely truthful representation.

"I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact," Oliver Dowden told the Mail on Sunday. He added that the series is a "beautifully produced work of fiction" and that it "should be very clear at the beginning it is just that".

Earl Spencer, brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, previously told ITV's Lorraine Kelly, has also voiced his worries about the television drama.

"I think it would help The Crown an enormous amount if, at the beginning of each episode, it stated that: 'This isn't true but it is based around some real events'," he said.
