The Creator of 'Gilmore Girls' Says New Episodes Are Never "Off the Table"
Amy Sherman-Palladino opened up about the stories she still wants to tell.
If you hold Stars Hollow and its merry band of residents close to your heart, you can rest easy knowing that if Amy Sherman-Palladino has her way (and everything lines up just right), there will always be the possibility of new Gilmore Girls episodes. Sherman-Palladino, who helmed the beloved show and its Netflix reboot, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, recently explained that she wants to explore some of the other characters from the series because underneath everything, the show is about family — and that alone means there's always going to be material to work with.
“The thing about families is they never work their shit out,” she told Rolling Stone. “They are dysfunctional forever and because of that, it’s the best possible way to come up with stories because you will never solve your problems there.”
She added that there was more to say about certain characters and storylines in both the show's original run and its reboot, but time constraints meant that she had to pare things down.
“I really never liked the way Lane’s life shook out. I would have liked to have spent more time on her,” she added. “I think it would be interesting to see a baby and a kid and what that next Gilmore Girl round would be.”

Unfortunately, Sherman-Palladino couldn't give a timeline as to when things could get started. Back in 2022 she revealed that a Gilmore Girls reboot is “absolutely not off the table.”
“It really is all about the timing,” she explained to US Weekly. “The stars just haven’t aligned yet.”
Lauren Graham (who plays Lorelai Gilmore) told TV Line that there is “no plan” for a revival — yet — but explained that she’d love to working with Sherman-Palladino again. “Everyone is doing their own thing,” Graham said at the time. “I love that character so much and I love Amy [Sherman-Palladino]. I will work with her any time.”
Her co-star Scott Patterson also said that he's open to coming back to the cozy, quiet charm of the show.
“I’m optimistic that there’s going to be more episodes,” he told Hollywood Life, adding that the end of A Year in the Life opened up an entire world of stories and that fans deserve more. “That would be a dirty trick, right? We have to find out, and we’re going to find out.”
Not everyone's so gung-ho, however. Alexis Bledel spoke about continuing her role after the Netflix series aired and didn't seem so hot on the idea.
“I don’t know if there is a need to do more. I would never want it to feel like we overstayed our welcome,” she told Deadline in April 2017. “There’s probably a way to keep these characters alive, but I don’t know if that’s the best thing for them.”
