Crane Operator Wins $1M Lottery Prize While Visiting Family: 'I Thought I Was Reading it Wrong!'
Nicholas Foxx "stopped to buy an energy drink and some Virginia Lottery scratcher tickets” when he bought the winning ticket, according to lottery officials
A Virginia crane operator has picked up a big chunk of change thanks to a lucky lottery ticket he purchased at a gas station.
Nicholas Foxx, of Roanoke, was recently “visiting family in Altavista when he stopped to buy an energy drink and some Virginia Lottery scratcher tickets” at A1 Mini Mart, according to a Sept. 19 news release from Virginia Lottery officials.
Upon scratching his “20X the Money” ticket, the crane operator learned he had purchased a $1 million winner.
“I thought I was reading it wrong!” Foxx said. “You don’t know anyone who’s hit the Lottery for that amount of money!”
Foxx opted to receive a one-time cash option of $625,000 before taxes, rather than receive the full $1 million prize over the next 30 years, according to lottery officials.
Meanwhile, the A1 Mini Mart that sold the ticket has received a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery.

The A1 Mini Mart is located in Campbell County, which lottery officials said “received more than $8 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.”
Four of the six top prizes have now been claimed in the Virginia Lottery’s “20X the Money” scratch-off game. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,958,400, though the chance of winning any prize is 1 in 3.65.
“In Fiscal Year 2024, the Lottery raised more than $934 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget,” lottery officials said.
