Couple's Invites Guests to Black-Tie Wedding Via Email and Asks for Cash to be Sent to Bride’s Venmo

A Reddit user is doing their best to give their cousin's wedding the benefit of the doubt.

In a post to Reddit's r/weddingshaming forum, the user shared their apprehensions about the family member's upcoming nuptials. Jeff, the cousin, and his fiancée Sarah are planning on a March wedding in Manhattan, the post begins.

During the family's recent Christmas celebration, the couple first announced the news of their engagement.

Shortly after the holidays, the groom texted the family on a group chat with the couple's upcoming date set for October, and sent information on a hotel near the venue — "no hotel blocks announced yet," the post read. One week later, however, Jeff returned to the family group chat, stating that they'd changed their mind and the date would now be in March — less than three months away.

Jeff asked family members who had already booked hotel rooms to get a refund. "Not a great note to start on," the poster wrote.

Later, the poster received the official wedding invitation via email, which noted that the affair was a black-tie event and would be held outside in Manhattan. In addition, the couple noted that there would be no hotel blocks or transport provided to guests. "They said we should just Uber" to the venue, the poster wrote.

In lieu of a registry, the pair listed bride's Venmo account.

"To me the black tie attire feels very rude on such short notice especially since at Christmas they were debating whether or not to have an open bar to save money, very sparse florals, and a DJ," the post read.

The poster noted that making the event so formal — not to mention placing much of the cost on guests — "feels insulting and inconsiderate."

Those in the comments were equally confused.

"Black tie in March, outdoor in Manhattan?? These things do not go together," one comment read. "Don't get me started on the Venmo as the registry."

Another speculated that the time of year and location would leave the couple and their guests "ankle deep in grey slush in Bryant Park or something," another comment read.
