A woman is now second-guessing her Valentine’s Day plans after she decided to cancel the original itinerary to make a home-cooked meal instead.

The 38-year-old woman, who has been married to her husband “Bob” for nearly 14 years, shares her dilemma in a Reddit post. The couple doesn't typically celebrate Valentine’s Day, but this year Bob decided to try.

“My husband surprised me saying we are going to go to my favorite restaurant for Valentines (it seems to be a new years resolution of his to start treating me better not that he’s horrible or anything but he felt he could start doing more),” the woman explains.

However, the couple later realized the set menu for Valentine’s Day was priced at £60 ($75) per person. Despite being in a position to afford it, old habits of questioning their spending habits led to a discussion about canceling the reservation.

“I casually mention to him about the [prices] saying ‘did you see how much the set menu is’ he replies that he didn't even think about it and didn't know it was a set menu. Then he goes on to say about how that's way too much and how he's sorry but looks like we will have to cancel,” she writes.

While disappointed, the wife ultimately agreed to the cancellation. She went ahead and called the restaurant herself, worried about any fees or deposits they might lose if they waited.

She attempted to book a less expensive alternative but found the options lacking in romance. So she decided to make a home-cooked meal — and Bob was not thrilled.

The woman went shopping for ingredients and even purchased a red tablecloth to create a romantic atmosphere at home. But upon his return home from a two-day trip, Bob expressed his disappointment with the change of plans. He felt his wife ruined his attempt to do something special for her, and made him appear inconsiderate.

The situation was further complicated when the wife presented him with a rose as a gift. “It was just something I picked up with the food and when getting the kids their presents,” she shares. “Thing is, I forgot to take the price off and he made some joke about my love only being worth X. It hurt a little cos at least I got him something.”

The tension further escalated the following morning during a coffee run. When the barista asked who would be paying, Bob made a comment about their joint account, to which the wife jokingly responded that he could at least pretend to pay on Valentine’s Day.

This exchange, which included the wife mentioning the rose incident to the barista, upset Bob.

“Afterwards he just seemed to act as though my plan all along was to make him look like a ‘thoughtless pig’ by cancelling the plans, making my own so I'm the one doing something for him and getting him the gift,” she shares.

Now, she’s wondering if she shouldn’t have cancelled the plans in the first place. The post has left Reddit users divided, as many say she should’ve let him cancel the plans himself, with others saying he already mentioned he would cancel them so she did him a favor.
