You could own a former train station and GP surgery which still has its old consultation rooms
Occupying a prime position within a busy valley community, this distinctive building has been a stalwart of public service since it was built - firstly as a railway station and then, more recently as a GP surgery - but now it's looking for a new owner and potentially a new function too.
Station Yard, at Windsor Place, Ynysybwl, near Pontypridd, could offer a healthy return down the tracks with a number of options for the new owner to consider. Debra Bisley, from Paul Fosh Auctions, says the historically intriguing, two-storey property offers a versatile layout and ample facilities for a multitude of new uses, subject to obtaining the relevant permissions.
According to website Coflein the station was constructed to serve the mining village of Ynysybwl, with the Ynysybwl Halt on the Ynysybwl Branch of the Taff Vale Railway providing passenger rail services from 1887 until 1953. The line remained in place for use by the Lady Windsor Colliery until closure in 1988. The track was subsequently removed and a cycle path now covers the line.

Debra Bisley says: "Station Yard was most recently used as a general practice surgery, although the eye-catching building was originally a train station which gives it its unique character and architectural appeal. The ground floor comprises a spacious reception area/foyer, designed to accommodate high foot traffic and also provide a comfortable waiting environment.
Debra continues: "Additionally, there are six well-proportioned treatment rooms, ideal for consultation or for use as office spaces, as well as four conveniently located WCs. Multiple exits/entrances provide ease and flexibility. The top floor offers additional treatment rooms, a kitchen and a WC.. There’s a large car park at the front of the property. We’ve also been told that the property was previously used as residential."
Of course, there's no guarantee that the building could go down the residential route, so a provisional chat with the local planning officer before the auction is advised but if change of use could be achieved and planning for one dwelling or conversion into apartments allowed, Station Yard would be a very unique place to call home.
On the commercial use angle, the station building with its later extension at the rear could become offices, a studio or manufacturing space or even a bar and events venue, again subject to planning approval. The surrounding area of Windsor Place has a mix of commercial and residential properties although in the main it is terraced housing with a mix of detached and semi-detached houses.
The auction lot details state that the property benefits from gas, electric and water (not tested) which also says that the auction house has been advised that there is no VAT due on the sale of this property which is being sold with vacant possession.
The auction house states that Ynysybwl is a village in the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough offering accessibility to nearby towns such as Pontypridd. The nearest railway station is Abercynon, located about 1.4 miles from Windsor Place which provides access to Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Bristol and beyond.
Station Yard, which is listed with a guide price of £315,000-plus is going under the hammer online with Paul Fosh Auctions which starts from 12 noon on Tuesday, February 4, and ends from 5pm on Thursday, February 6, on the company's website - call 01633 254044 to find out more.
