Sinéad O’Connor died from natural causes, a coroner has concluded.

An autopsy reported confirmed the news about the singer, who passed away in July aged 56. As a result, the coroner investigating O’Connor’s passing has “therefore ceased their involvement in her death”, according to the New York Times.

O’Connor’s death was first reported by Irish news outlet RTE in 2023, after her family issued a statement.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the statement read. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

O’Connor, who shot to fame following the international smash hit, Nothing Compares 2 U, was found dead at her home in South East London. At the time, police said they were not treating her death as suspicious.

After news of O’Connor’s death broke, numerous musicians, including Kate Bush, Massive Attack and U2 paid tribute to the star, as well as her impact on music.

An outspoken critic of abuse in the Catholic church, O’Connor was criticised in 1992 after she protested on Saturday Night Live by tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II.

In October 2018, O’Connor announced she had converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada' Davitt.

In the weeks before her death, the singer announced she was hoping to release a new album.

“Sinéad was completing her new album, reviewing new tour dates for 2024 and considering opportunities in relation to a movie of her book,” O’Connor’s management confirmed to Billboard. “Wonderful plans were afoot at this time. Testament and tribute to those who have put their hearts first for Sinéad, to whom we are forever grateful.”
