Coronation Street's Roy Cropper 'guilty' of Lauren's murder as star casts doubt over his innocence
It’s undoubredly the biggest story on Coronation Street: just where is Lauren Bolton?
The teen has been missing since February, with multiple residents becoming the prime suspect, from Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) to, currently, Roy Cropper (David Neilson).
Fan-favourite Corrie character Roy was initially a helping hand to Lauren, trying to get the young girl back on her feet after she fell on rough times. However, when she disappeared, Roy’s kindness was met with suspicion by the police, resulting in his arrest by DS Swain (Vicky Myers).
While most are hoping Roy is freed and will return back to Weatherfield soon, there is one Corrie actor who has expressed that Roy could be guilty.
Coronation Street actor Daniel Brocklenank (who plays Billy Mayhew) posted an image of a himself wearing a t-shirt with the slogan ‘Roy Cropper is innocent’ followed by the caption “Billy would definitely be on Roy’s side #FreeRoyCropper”, on Instagram.
Lots of comments from fans were demanding Roy be free. One said: “Save Roy Cropped from these wrongful accusations. In fact make him PCC to sort Weatherfield police out!”
Another added: “Biggest scandal since the free deidre campaign x”. A third said: “So he should be Daniel, Roy wouldn’t do such a think would he? He’s one of the nicest characters in soap and probably one of the most caring people in real life too if his on screen persona is anything to go by!”
However, one of Daniel’s co-stars isn’t sold on Roy’s innocence. Jack P Shepherd who plays David Platt commented: “I think he’s done it”.
Despite the harsh comment, most fans took it as a joke, although some think it could be a hint at what’s to come. They said: “Is this some spoiler?! I’d be so devastated !!!! ' They continued to say: “There’s just NO WAY but then again… To really shock you, I’m no writer but if I were it’s a show and I’d make the one you least expect a killer”.
During a chat with the presenters of This Morning, actor David Neilson, who plays Roy, confessed he thought his alter ego would have been jailed a while ago.
“He's [Roy] his own worst enemy! I mean, he needs support from himself, he puts himself there. I'm amazed that I [Roy] haven't been in prison before because everyone else has!" he shared.
“Roy is innocent in every respect, he is innocent of the crime, but he is also an innocent soul. He never thought for one minute it would come to this, he truly felt that if he simply answered everything honestly it would all be okay, and he was naïve to assume that being innocent meant that he would be seen to be innocent."
