In an emotional reveal, Coronation Street legend Helen Worth has announced her departure from her iconic role as Gail Platt after an incredible 50 years on the show. Since her first appearance in 1974, Helen's character has been at the heart of some of the most unforgettable storylines on the cobbles.

The 73 year old actress shared that she feels it's the "perfect time" to say farewell following a remarkable half-century in Weatherfield. With the news breaking, fans have been abuzz with theories on how Gail will leave the street.

While there were whispers that Gail might meet a grim fate at the hands of the menacing Joel Deering (portrayed by Calum Lill), who attacked teenager Lauren Bolton (played by Cait Fitton), insiders suggest a different twist is in store for her exit.

A source told The Sun that Corrie's producers are keen on giving Gail a send-off filled with joy, potentially setting the stage for the return of her former flame Martin Platt, brought to life by Sean Wilson.

The insider revealed to the newspaper: "A number of options were considered for Gail's departure from the cobbles but bosses knew the moment needed to truly celebrate one of Corrie's most iconic characters as well as honour Helen's astonishing run on the soap."

They elaborated that it wouldn't sit right to end Gail's journey with tragedy, reports the Express, given the numerous sorrows she's already faced. Instead, reuniting her with her past love Martin felt like the perfect tribute.

The source added: "Martin was always considered the one that got away and bosses are thrilled they've been able to tempt Sean back to wave Gail goodbye."

"The plotline has many nuances, twists and turns but script writers all want this to feel like a gorgeous end of Gail's story, with her finally finding her happy ending."

OK! has contacted ITV for comment.

The last time viewers saw Martin in Weatherfield was back in 2018 when he made a brief appearance following his exit in 2005. Sean has since taken a step back from acting, however, he told the Express that although there were no plans of making a comeback to the cobbles, if the opportunity arose he might consider it.

He said: "I made it clear back in 2018 that it wouldn't be possible for me to move forward with any kind of editorial improvement in my situation. You know what? The character was well-loved even when he went back in 2018. It's up to the powers that be."
