Coronation Street devotees are worried that a tragic twist might be on the horizon for iconic character Emily Bishop.

Emily, portrayed by Eileen Derbyshire, first graced the cobbles in 1961. As a cherished resident of Weatherfield, Emily quickly became a fan favourite and a mainstay of the soap.

Moreover, Eileen didn't bid farewell until 2016 - making her one of the longest-serving stars in UK soap history. Only Bill Roache, who has played Ken Barlow since the inaugural episode in 1960, has been on the show longer than her.

The actress exited the show due to personal circumstances, and it was uncertain at the time whether her departure was temporary or permanent. Emily's exit on the soap was explained as a trip to Peru to visit a relative.

It was later disclosed that Emily is now residing in Edinburgh. And in 2019, fans were overjoyed when she made a surprise appearance in an episode of the ITV soap, reports the Express.

Emily featured as her close friend Ken Barlow (William Roache) marked his 80th birthday in the Rovers Return surrounded by loved ones. She wasn't there to celebrate with him in person but had recorded a video message for her old pal.

At the time, insiders revealed that Corrie bosses were eager to bring the actress back to the cobbles. However, fans are now apprehensive that the character could meet a tragic end in a shocking twist as they believe she is "clearly not returning."

In a Corrie fan forum, one viewer pondered: "Is it time she was killed off as she is clearly not returning to the show? Time for Emily to have a proper send-off deserving for a long-serving character."

A second chimed in: "I would like Emily to return and give her an onscreen death."

Meanwhile, a third shared: "She's such an iconic character someone on the Street should get some notice about it.."

Another fan added their voice to the conversation, saying: "I don't think there is a chance Eileen Derbyshire will return again."

And a fourth contributed: "They still have the power to kill her off-screen and give her an on-screen funeral. But I guess after all this time there isn't really much point."
