In recent years, walking wellness holidays, gastro trips and train bragging have all emerged as the latest way to enjoy travel, and for 2024, experts shared a new trend: cool-cationing

Last year, leading digital travel platform Booking.com surveyed over 27,000 travellers across 33 countries to predict cool-cationing as one of its top travel trends for 2024. While the 2025 is bringing a whole host of new trends, including astro adventures and horti-culture, cool-cationing appears to be here to stay and is one trend we'll taking into 2025...

What is cool-cationing?

Cool-cationers are those who are swapping sun seeking trips for refreshing breaks to colder climates: think UK staycations or snow holidays to the likes of Norway or Finland.

This shift is partly due to the record-breaking temperatures causing heatwaves worldwide. For many travellers, hot sun holidays are no longer appealing, and instead they're seeking relaxation in destinations with colder climes while trying to travel more sustainably.

In fact, when the research by Booking.com was carried out, 42 per cent of UK travellers reported that climate change would impact their travel plans for 2024, while more than two out of five travellers (43 per cent) said they would use their holidays as a chance to escape to cooler destinations as temperatures rise close to home.

The best type of holiday for cool-cationers

Unsurprisingly, the rising trend has encouraged cool-cationers to seek out water-centric trips to take the heat off. Have you heard of the blue mind theory? It's the idea that being on, near or in water can help to soothe the mind and boost relaxation. And, it appears this rings true for UK travellers, as 74 per cent of them agreed that being close to the water helps them to instantly relax.

What's more, 28 per cent of travellers said they would be interested in water-centric holidays. Thanks to the rise of wild swimming and cold water immersions, there's no shortage of holidays for cool-cationers in 2025.

It's clear that water is no longer just the backdrop to escapes for cool-cationers, it's the main event. With many travellers now seeking out cooler climes and destinations offering mindful water experiences.
