Controversial plans for Wetherspoons in 'Tory town' greenlit despite 'unpleasant behaviour' fears
A new Leeds Wetherspoons which has been through a whirlwind of development chaos has finally been granted full planning permission.
The former Sant' Angelo building, in Wetherby, with its prominent yellow colour, has been standing idle on a corner of High Street ever since it closed down in September 2022.
Tim Martin's JD Wetherspoon was quick to acquire the property. The pub goliath announced a £2.25 million makeover to the venue previously known as The Angel pub before it was converted into a restaurant.

Wetherspoons' plans divided the community, with some residents worried about the chain attracting 'drunkenness and unpleasant behaviour' to their 'Tory town'' known for its flower displays and peaceful country walks.
The national pub chain then cancelled plans to develop the old restaurant in August 2023 with doubts over its commercial viability. JD Wetherspoon then reversed that decision last April with plans once again going ahead.
After two years, Wetherspoons has been granted full planning permission by Leeds City Council to convert the building into a pub once again. The plans were approved on Thursday, January 16.
These will involve demolishing the conservatory, extending the rear side of the building, making changes to the roof, altering openings and windows, and adding new access points. They will also be erecting a new pergola, bin store and reinstating a barrel drop.
