This Contemporary Ski Home in Aspen Brings Some Beverly Hills Style to the Mountains

In 2020, a Los Angeles-based couple tapped Holly Hunt, founder of interior design firm House of Hunt, to revitalize a property in Aspen, Colorado, located on a coveted corner lot near the city’s downtown area.

The owners, who primarily live in Beverly Hills with their two children, decided to work with the existing structure versus tearing down the home, which was originally built in 2000. Not only did this save several years of construction work, but Hunt rolled out a down-to-the studs renovation that kept the integrity of the home while breathing new life into every corner. The 4,400-square-foot residence has two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and one powder room, as well as lovely outdoor spaces surrounded by towering trees and manicured landscaping.

“Working with the existing structure, we kept the exterior shell and emptied the interior to the studs with creative freedom to build a new interior,” Holly Hunt tells Robb Report. “In the living room, we installed a floor-to-ceiling glass wall facing the garden, which brought in more light. The garden was lowered to be level with the living room for seamless indoor-outdoor living, and we built a four-foot-high textured stone wall around the perimeter for privacy.”

The exterior of the home is white-painted brick, and Hunt and her team replaced all the existing windows with black-framed windows, as well as adding a new roof. Inside, the main floor features an open-concept layout, which integrates the kitchen, dining room, and spacious living room. As part of the renovation, 90 square feet were added, including five feet of length to the living room, plus an additional six inches added to the ceiling height on the main and lower levels. The living room features 10-foot-high ceilings. The furnishings in the living space are exceptionally meaningful; the color palette was inspired by the owners’ Aussidoodle, named Scarlet. There’s a 14-foot red sofa, a multi-use table, white plaster walls, and a fireplace accentuated by polished black granite and golden bronze detailing.

“The design is shaped by the existing structure and features a clean yet tactile palette with layering textures, natural stone and wood materials, custom millwork, curated furnishings—all of which create a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors,” Hunt says. “Large windows and door frames further accentuate the design and highlight the surrounding mountain landscape and beauty of Aspen’s terrain.”

Hunt, who is known for her luxury custom furnishings, created a custom dining room table in European chestnut with metal detailing, which she paired with Poltrona Frau Sedia dining chairs and a leather banquette. There’s also a Boffi kitchen with dark oak cabinetry, state-of-the-art appliances, and a kitchen island. The owners are also avid art collectors, and the home includes an installation from Spanish sculptor Nacho Carbonell, as well as works from Rashid Johnson, Wade Guyton, Jonas Wood, Elizabeth Neel, Naudline Pierre, and more. The staircase leading up to the second floor has a windowed turret, which adds a dramatic feel to the transition between the first and second floors. The upstairs holds the primary suite, the primary bathroom, and an office. The bedroom, bathroom, and closet feature sloped and peaked ceilings cladded in blond oak, as well as Taj Mahal quartzite with mid-tone oak cabinetry to complement the stone.

Finally, the lower level includes the family room and three en suite bedrooms. Outside is a cozy lounge space with a fireplace and dining area. Hunt’s designer director, Jim Dynes, and lead designer, Neesha Reddivari, also helped lead the renovation.
