If you’re wanting to spend more time in individual spots, here is your guide to some of the brightest towns in Wales and what else makes these gorgeous areas unique.
Aberaeron
Aberaeron is a proper pastel paradise. Located by Cardigan bay, this area is a sea of gentle colours, from soft pinks to blues, yellows and greens.
This town was planned in the Georgian style, which means its houses are built in neat rows with matching designs. Over time, the homes have become a far cry from traditional plain colours, creating the picture perfect scene which makes you feel like you’ve stepped right into the middle of a children’s story book.
But it’s not just about the pretty buildings. Little shops, and cosy cafés line the streets. So whether you’re admiring pastel houses from afar or stopping for a coffee by the water, it’s definitely a place worth slowing down in to appreciate it all.
People on TikTok have been lapping it up, with one creator captioning their video where they documenting their day there: “It's like walking through a paint palette with all those brightly coloured houses.”
Tenby
For more colour on the coast, Tenby is a must. Anyone who is familiar with Wales will know that this town is bursting with colour thanks to its brightly painted harbour houses and charming fishing cottages.
The narrow, winding streets are twisting and turning with bright colours everywhere you go. One of the most photographed spots is of course the seafront which has got to be one of the most iconic scenes in Wales.
When you’re visiting, you might see traditional fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, and the town walls which are remnants of an old fortress add a touch of history to this Instagram hotspot of an area.
Local festivals, street performances, and open-air markets make Tenby even livelier - allowing all of its history and modern life to mix together perfectly. It’s a prime location for snapping clips for your social media, and it’s no surprise that TikTok is swarming with Tenby appreciation posts.
One creator remarked: “There’s always a rainbow in the beautiful Welsh seaside resort of Tenby.”
Portmeirion
Portmeirion is a place unlike any other in Wales. Built in the 1920s by architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, this village looks like a mix of Mediterranean villages and a Disney resort. The buildings are painted less in pastel shades and more in bold, bright colours like reds, blues, and yellows.
The result is a playful Italianate style village on the coast of North Wales. Visitors can wander through brightly-coloured streets, enjoying the unusual architecture and a bite-sized piece of Italy.
Although it’s by the coast, Portmeirion is also set in 70 acres of exotic woodland - so it’s perfect for nature lovers. It also has two stylish hotels, a cluster of self-catering cottages, shops, a spa, cafes and plenty of brilliant restaurants.
If you haven’t spotted this gem on TikTok, then quite frankly, where have you been? There are hundreds of fun videos of people showing off this cute and colourful village.
One user captioned their clips: “We found a little bit of Italy, much closer to home. North Wales has some really beautiful places to visit. Portmeirion is a tourist village where you can explore, have a meal or even stay the night!”
Beaumaris
We’re taking it back to softer shades in Beaumaris, where there are plenty of splashes of colour dotted around the town. And one street (locally known as Beaumaris West End) features townhouses that are painted in every colour of the rainbow. Sitting on the waterfront, it’s a popular scene with photographers and you’ll often spot it in Welsh postcards.
The entire row is now Grade II listed, and some locals say that says the bright shades are tribute to the fishermen who worked there many years ago. Beaumaris itself dates all the way back to the Viking era, and there’s plenty to do in the area, from a Taylor Swift-themed coffee shop to a stunning castle, and of course, the stunning beach that looks out to the North Wales coastline and Snowdonia mountain range.
There are countless videos made celebrating the area, and this particular TikTok shows how the bright houses make the seafront look extra vibrant, even in blustery weather conditions.
Mumbles
If you want proper peace and quiet, it doesn’t get much better than Mumbles, which marks the beginning of the Gower Peninsula’s coastline.
Also nestled in the popular seaside town is Village Lane, which is a steep road full of stunning brightly-coloured houses, several of which are available to stay in through Airbnb.
As you can imagine, TikTokers can’t get enough of Mumbles, with lots of videos of the area going viral on the social media platform. While the town itself remains popular with creators, it seems that Village Lane has fewer shots floating around.
One video made showing off the cheerful street was posted with the caption: “where iconic colourful houses meet breath-taking views of the bay.”
New Quay
In New Quay, the old fishermen’s cottages along the quay feature a mix of soft blues, sunny yellows, and gentle pinks which instantly lift anyone's spirits.
Certain spots in New Quay have extra details that make them stand out even more. One bar, Jitterbug, has a freshly painted dusky green that looks warm and inviting that no one could miss, while a nearby clothes and gift shop Box of Delights has a light turquoise that matches the gorgeous clear skies and sea nearby.
Strolling through New Quay, it's obvious how much care goes into preserving the town’s distinctive look, and anyone who's visited will likely recognise the easy-going atmosphere which makes it a gorgeous place to spend time in whether you're a local or a tourist.
Showing off the coastal life around the area, one TikTok creator added text over their video with clips of New Quay, writing: "I could be a city girl... wait, I lied", featuring some gorgeous shots of the nearby beaches.
