Clogs are set to be the shoe of the summer. No, really.

It might sound like an April Fools but in truth, the writing has been on the wall for some time. For as we re-enter society and look for a shoe that exudes elegance and the put-togetherness our wardrobes have been so lacking while also maintaining the comfort of a slipper, what could be more apropos than a chic clog?

And really, they are chic. If you don’t believe me, look to the Hermès spring/ summer 2021 show, where all 46 looks came paired with a luxe interpretation of the leather slip-on in brown, pale taupe, black and cream. And Hermès wasn’t the only luxury brand to embrace the Dutch farmers shoes. Celine’s calfskin Les Bois clogs (£690, celine.com) are elegant enough to wear with summer dresses and skirts, while Bally’s chunky gold studded Eugeny clogs (£420, bally.com) would look great with cropped black jeans and a leather blazer.

For more low-key options, Re/Done do a lovely light brown suede slip-on pair (£524, Farfetch.com) that would look perfect with light blue flares and a shirt, and Ancient Greek has added clogs to its edit of gladiator sandals for summer 21, the best of which is a sling-back style that comes in chestnut and black with a gold winged buckle clasp (£280, ancient-greek-sandals.com).

For a cutesier clog game try Italian shoemaker Fabrizio Viti, who’s sweet slip-ons come either daisy-dotted, shearling-lined or in super summery gingham (£490, matchesfashion.com). For those planning to spend another summer gardening, Hunter’s new rubber Play clog (£55, hunter.com) is a waterproof and practical way to tackle the trend.

If last summer we went berserk for Birkenstocks, this year we’ll be cuckoo for the clog.
