Cincinnati Zoo's beloved hippo Fiona celebrates sixth Birthday

Cincinnati's beloved hippo Fiona turned six years old on Tuesday.

Since her birth in 2017, the giant water-dwelling mammal has won over the hearts of residents in the city.

Celebrations will be low-key due to the uncertainty of January temperatures, but the zoo and area businesses are marking the occasion with goodies and prizes.

Each birthday, Fiona receives a cake fit for a queen, with zoo officials broadcasting her big party around the world via Facebook Live - while visitors were also able to celebrate with her.

Ahead of her birthday, Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard said: "It looks like it will be warm enough for the hippos to be out in the afternoon, so visitors may be able to wish her a happy birthday in person. There's also the option to watch the birthday action on the live hippo cam that's available to members and virtual members."

Zookeepers are also encouraging Fiona fans to give a $5 birthday gift. Everyone who donates will receive a digital Fiona kiss, while one lucky winner will get to stay at the zoo and meet Fiona, her little brother Fritz, and mum Bibi in person.

Local firms are also celebrating Fiona's birthday - with items on offer including a pottery collection, her own brand of coffee, and even a special beer.
