New Year's Day: Opening times for Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Lidl

From last-minute essentials or stocking up on supplies to see you through to the new year, a trip to the supermarket is inevitable over the festive period, even if just to escape family.

But, with many shops planning to close their doors at irregular times in the coming weeks, knowing where to pick up some extra food or booze can be confusing.

So, to help make things a little easier for you, we’ve compiled a handy list of opening and closing times for major supermarkets over the festive period.

Aldi

Most Aldi stores will be open up until Christmas Eve, although stores close early on the 24 December.

Christmas Eve 24 Dec – 8am-6pm

Christmas Day 25 Dec: CLOSED

Boxing Day 26 Dec: CLOSED

Friday 27 Dec: 8am-8pm

Saturday 28 Dec: 8am-8pm

Sunday 29 Dec: 10am-4pm

Monday 30 Dec: 8am-8pm

New Year’s Eve 31 Dec: 8am-6pm

New Year’s Day 1 Jan: CLOSED

Aldi also advise customers check local store times for any individual variations, using their store finder tool.

Asda

An ASDA spokesperson confirmed the exact hours will not be released until two weeks before Christmas.

But last year all ASDA stores were closed on Christmas Day and opened again on Boxing Day from 9am until 6pm.

Stores then returned to normal hours on 27 December till 30 December before operating a reduced schedule for New Year’s Eve.

Co-op

This year Co-Op have announced that stores across the 16 counties of Central England will be staying open later, although times may vary in some areas.

While closed for Christmas Day itself, they’re re-opening on Boxing Day for any Christmas emergencies.

Christmas Eve 24 Dec: 7am – 8pm

Christmas Day 25 Dec: CLOSED (except filling stations in Lane Head Road in Shepley, Carlton Road in Barnsley, Halifax Road in Huddersfield, Huthwaite Road in Mansfield, Hartshay Hill in Ripley, and Birley Moor in Sheffield).

Boxing Day 26 Dec: 9am – 5pm

Friday 27 Dec: Normal hours

Saturday 28 Dec: Normal hours

Sunday 29 Dec: Normal hours

Monday 30 Dec: 7am – 8pm

New Year’s Eve 31 Dec: Selected convenience stores open from 9am – 5pm, supermarkets open 10am – 4pm

New Year's Day: Most supermarkets will be open from 8am - 8pm.

Lidl

Lidl’s Christmas opening hours vary depending on location but the general rules are as follows:

Saturday 21 Dec: 8am-10pm

Sunday 22 Dec: Open as normal

Monday 23 Dec: 8am-10pm

Christmas Eve: 8am-6pm (expect inside M25 8am-7pm)

Christmas Day: CLOSED

Boxing Day: CLOSED

Friday 27 Dec: Normal hours

Saturday 28 Dec: Normal hours

Sunday 29 Dec: Normal hours

Monday 30 Dec: Normal hours

New Year’s Eve: 8am-6pm (expect inside M25 8am-7pm)

New Year’s Day: CLOSED

If you need to re-stock on food and drink, the good news is that Marks & Spencer’s is only fully shutting its doors for Christmas Day this year with a reduced service resuming on Boxing Day.

Christmas Eve 24 Dec: The majority of stores will be open from 6 or 7am, with some opening at 5am. Many stores will close early (5pm or 6pm)

Christmas Day 25 Dec: CLOSED

Boxing Day 26 Dec: Stores in shopping centres will be operating with normal opening hours

Thursday 27 Dec: All stores open, although some will be operating with reduced trading hours

Friday 28 Dec: All stores open, although some will be operating with reduced trading hours

Saturday 29 Dec: All stores open, although some will be operating with reduced trading hours

Sunday 30 Dec:All stores open, although some will be operating with reduced trading hours

New Year’s Eve 31 Dec: All stores open, although some operating with reduced trading hours

New Year’s Day 1 Jan: Stores in shopping centres will be operating with normal opening hours

The only day Morrison’s will be closed is Christmas Day but the rest of their hours over the festive period vary, so make sure you check before going to the shops.

Christmas Eve 24 Dec: Supermarkets open from 6am – 6pm, petrol stations open from 5.30am – 6.30pm

Christmas Day 25 Dec: CLOSED

Boxing Day 26 Dec: Supermarkets open from 9am – 6pm, petrol stations open from 8am – 8pm

Thursday 27 Dec: Normal opening hours

Friday 28 Dec: Normal opening hours

Saturday 29 Dec: Normal opening hours

Sunday 30 Dec: Normal opening hours

Despite closing for Christmas Day, most Sainsbury’s stores will be open again on Boxing Day but with reduced opening hours.

Customers are advised to use Tesco‘s store locator online to check their local shop’s opening times over the Christmas period. This is because the official times aren’t released till closer to the big day.

Although they have released New Year’s times.

New Year’s Eve: Extras, superstores and metro stores open usual time till 7pm and express stores until till 10pm

New Year’s Day: England, Wales and Northern Ireland extras, superstores and metro stores open 9am-6pm

Waitrose will be operating with normal trading hours for most of the festive period, with only Christmas Day and Boxing Day seeing all stores close their doors (apart from their motorway service station stores).
