Christina Aguilera has no regrets over 'rebellious' early 2000s fashion looks
Christina Aguilera has no regrets over some of her divisive fashion looks from the early 2000s.
In a video for Vogue's Life in Looks series, the Beautiful hitmaker looked back at 12 of her most memorable outfits - extending all the way back to the black cutout dress she sported to the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
During the conversation, Christina pinpointed the crushed dark red velvet dress that she wore to the 2001 Blockbuster Entertainment Awards as one of her favourite ensembles.
"It was so rebellious at the time, I hadn't done (2002 album) Stripped yet, hadn't worn the chaps yet. I was just so into not conforming. I wanted the teased-out, over-the-top look," she said, referring to her voluminous platinum blonde hairstyle. "It looked like it should have maybe been photographed for a magazine or an editorial spread. But it was very much something that at the time, would never be accepted on a red carpet. That was probably part of my love for the rebelliousness of knowing it offended certain people. I really wanted to start expressing myself and it was almost my way of visually telling people to back off and (saying) 'I'm going to do my thing now.'"
Following the release of Stripped, Christina continued to experiment with daring outfits - many of which were inspired by her confidence and desire to express her sexuality.
"I wanted this album to embrace every different part of being a woman," the 41-year-old continued. "There's such a rulebook that's handed to us (as women in music), and I was given it since I was a little girl. The older I got, the more I realised you have to stand up against it and create your own story. I wanted to go against the grain of what a pop star should look and sound like."
