Hear that? It's the sound of makeup lovers' hearts breaking as they get a look at a photo taken in a Sephora store last week. In it, it appears that every single tester of Make Up For Ever eyeshadow has been smashed to rainbow bits by some heartless heathen.

But according to the woman who snapped the picture, the culprit was actually a small child who was temporarily left unattended by his or her mother.

"It looked 100 times worse in real life," Brittney Nelson (who doesn't work at Sephora) said in her Facebook post about the scene, which has since been shared more than 25,000 times. She estimated that the destroyed makeup amounts to about $1,300 (£980.24).

It evoked an emotional response in many a beauty maven.

But it's something else Nelson said in her post that's getting the most heated response: "Mammas, please shop for your makeup without your tiny humans."

The comment is being interpreted as putting an unrealistic demand on moms.
