If you're already thinking about a post-summer getaway, autumn is a great time for a budget-friendly city break in Europe. The weather is often still warm, the tourist spots are less crowded and air fares start to get cheaper. When it comes to finding the best value overall, Belgrade is a destination to consider.

The Serbian capital has been named the cheapest city to visit this autumn in the Post Office Travel Money City Costs Barometer. The report compared the average prices that holidaymakers will have to pay for two nights of three-star accommodation over the first weekend in October. The analysis of 46 cities also looked at the cost of 11 other essential holiday items, including a coffee, a glass of wine, a three-course evening meal, a travel card, admission to a top art gallery and a sight-seeing city bus tour.

With hotels in Belgrade a lot more affordable than other European capitals, the total cost of a trip to the city came in at £148.70. An evening meal, including a bottle of house wine, was found to be one of best bargains, at £33.99 for two people. And the price of entry to the city's top attraction - the Church of Saint Sava - came in at under £3 per person. It's worth noting that flights, which take around 2 hours 40 minutes from London, were not included in the survey.

Elsewhere in Europe, Krakow, which was named the cheapest city break in the spring, slipped to second place, at £169.21 for a weekend stay. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, followed closely behind at £169.56. And after Lisbon's recent surge in popularity, Porto could be an affordable alternative if you're set on exploring Portugal.
