OpenAI’s ChatGPT has suffered its second outage this year, leaving users angry over its reported inconsistency and unreliability in 2025 so far.

The chatbot went down on Wednesday, February 5, temporarily leaving thousands unable to access the system. More than 20,000 users reported issues with ChatGPT, marking a widespread disruption across multiple countries.

According to Downdetector, which tracks online outages, complaints surged to nearly 500 around 4.30am on Thursday, February 6 in the UK as users fought to log in or receive any response from the AI.

Regular users, businesses and developers were affected. The majority of the shutdown seemed to have taken place in England, however there was some light activity regarding problems witnessed in the Glasgow area.

Setbacks were still filtering in at around 10am. OpenAI acknowledged the issue stating that it was investigating. Shortly after, the company confirmed that some users were seeing recovery signals from API and Sora services.

While the exact cause remains unknown, OpenAI has assured that a fix has been implemented.

Many frustrated users took to social media, particularly X, to vent their annoyance during the outage.

One wrote: "ChatGPT down again ??! surprised not surprised !!!"

Another penned: Chatgpt is down… I thought it got sick of me complaining omg ???"

A third complained: "chatgpt down when i almost understood something".

The incident marks the second time ChatGPT has experienced a major disruption this year. ChatGPT previously went down on January 23 for nearly an hour, with users encountering error messages.

Despite the technical setbacks, OpenAI continues to monitor and address service disruptions as they arise.
