Anne Hathaway revisits the hooded gown on the red carpet

Anne Hathaway's fashion resurgence has been a delight to watch. The actor's collaboration with stylist Erin Walsh has landed her on best dressed and style inspiration lists across the board with her cut-out safety pinned Versace tribute to Karl Lagerfeld making her one of the best dressed attendees on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet.

Now the actor has taken on the haute hood micro trend with aplomb.

Hathaway attended an event for Bulgari in Venice on Tuesday with fellow brand ambassadors Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Zendaya wearing an gold and silver embellished Versace gown complete with slinky hood.

The new take on the ‘naked dress’ – with its plunging cowl neck, slinky embellished tulle and sky-high thigh slit – showed off Hathaway's honed figure, but it was the addition of a hooded section, placed over the actor's brunette hair which screamed fashion forward.

But, as it turns out, it's not the first time that Hathaway has donned the slightly avant-garde look.

Back in 2015, she wore a golden, cap-sleeved Ralph Lauren gown on the Met Gala red carpet, which featured a hood of its own.

The hooded dress on the red carpet made a resurgence more recently, and gradually gained momentum throughout 2022.

Rihanna defied all expectations of a cocooned maternity wardrobe when she stepped out in an Alaïa red wrap coat, complete with structured hood in February last year.

Elsewhere, models Amber Valletta and Kate Moss wore similarly draped goddess gowns by Saint Laurent at the WSJ Innovator awards in November 2022, which both featured a hooded element.

Since, the likes of Katie Holmes, Michaela Coel and Olivia Wilde have all adopted the trend on the red carpet. And, who could forget Janelle Monáe’s glittering hooded Met Gala looks in both 2020 and 2022.

And it doesn't stop there.

Margot Robbie stepped out for the Babylon premiere in December in a hooded dress by Alaïa – one of the first designer's famous for adopting the silhouette in the late Eighties and early Nineties – and Netflix star Jenna Ortega attended an event for Saint Laurent in another black take on the hooded dress.

The designer and his muse, Grace Jones, championed the trend in the late-1980s, with Jones donning several other designs by the late Azzedine Alaïa which featured hoods or hooded elements.

Even earlier, Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by a purple tubular dress worn by Martha Graham, the American dancer, in her 1930 choreography Lamentation to create his signature hooded 'capuche' pieces in the mid-1980s.

Inspiration struck again to create a gold hooded number for his final haute couture show in 2002, which was brought out of the archive in a full circle moment for the trend, for Miley Cyrus to wear in the video for her single 'Flowers' earlier this year.
