Caviar: Why fish eggs should be your hero skincare ingredient

The latest beauty trend certainly has us wondering if something fishy is going on. If you’ve ever wondered how to get smooth, glowing skin, the hottest thing in skincare right now is caviar. Known more for blinis and bubbles rather than moisturiser and makeup, caviar is essentially the eggs of fish. With pricey, high end brands like La Prairie harnessing its power for decades, the benefits of caviar used to be seen as a luxury but the secret is out and we’re seeing caviar skincare available for all budgets.

Why is caviar so good for you?

Shona Wilkinson, nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.com, explains “”Fish eggs naturally contain large amounts of beneficial vitamins, minerals and nutrients, as they are mean to nourish and feed an embryo. They are also naturally high in zinc which is required for normal hair, skin and nails, and for this reason is hailed as one of the most important nutrients for beauty.”

“Caviar is the ultimate anti-ageing treatment”, agrees Christian Breton, Founder of Christian BRETON, “Rich in vitamins and amino acids, it provides round-the-clock hydration whilst also reducing sagging, increasing firmness, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and eliminating puffiness and dark under-eye circles.”

There’s not just one type of of caviar used in skincare though. Caviar could mean any non-fertilised fish egg. The majority is sturgeon but eggs of other fish, like salmon, could also be marketed as caviar and may account for cheaper products available.

There’s a reason why caviar is often found in anti ageing products and eye creams. “Caviar feeds the skin with essential proteins, carbohydrates and fatty acids that help build up the neuro-transmitters in the skin that are responsible for firming muscle tone” explains Christian. “A better muscle tone equals less sagging!”

By triggering a response that tones the muscles, caviar extract is unique in that it addresses the root of the problem to reverse muscle sagging unlike many skincare products which only address the loss of firmness. But with potent caviar extracts unable to be synthetically produced, costs are slightly higher than your average face cream. Many breakthrough ingredients do start in the high-end market due to the research costs and eventually diffuse through to more affordable levels over time, albeit sometimes at lower concentration and potency.

If you’re not enthused about putting fish on your face, the good news is that you can benefit equally from it in your diet. In addition to eating lots of leafy greens and oily fish, you can also try a zinc supplement for an additional nutritional boost.
