Cate Blanchett Just Wore A Top Made Entirely Out Of Antique Spoons
Cate Blanchett is paving the way for sustainable fashion to become the norm in Hollywood, and she’s doing so one step – or spoonful? – at a time.
Blanchett has a tendency to re-wear clothes on the red carpet, a rare move for film stars when every new starry event or press tour seems to invite the curation of a brand-new wardrobe. And while her latest red-carpet look is an outfit we’ve never seen on her before, it’s also, technically, nothing new.

For an event for her new film Borderlands at TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Blanchett arrived in a custom-made Hodakova outfit that breathed new life into a mundane kitchen item. Swedish designer Ellen Hodakova Larsson assembled 102 spoons, sourced straight from Stockholm, painstakingly layering the utensils over each other to build a unique armoured effect on Blanchett’s backless halterneck top. The eye-catching garment was styled with black reconstructed tapered trousers and black leather pumps.
Since founding Hodakova in 2021, Larsson has made it her mission to redefine the fashion industry by repurposing and upcycling materials to craft her whimsical designs. It’s a responsibility that clearly aligns with Blanchett’s own aims.
For years, the actor has used her platform to speak up about the fashion world’s sustainability crisis. 'We’ve seen over the last decade it used to be seasonal, now it’s trans-seasonal, multi-seasonal, and brands are designing for outlet stores,' she said in a 2020 interview with WWD. 'When you know the world is consuming 18 billion pieces of clothing a year, which is up 400 percent from a decade ago, you think, this is not working.'
