Radio listeners were reduced to tears yesterday when Caroline Flack's mother phoned in to discuss the 'awful' impact of Jeremy Clarkson's comments about Meghan Markle.

To recap, in a column for The Sun last week, the former Top Gear host wrote that he despises the Duchess of Sussex 'on a cellular level' and dreams of people throwing 'excrement' at her naked in the street.

Jeremy received widespread backlash for the comments, with his own daughter taking to social media to say she stands 'against everything' he'd written. Since then, the presenter told fans he's been 'horrified' by the fallout.

'Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it,' he tweeted yesterday. 'In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.'

But around the same time, during LBC's Shelagh Fogarty show, Christine Flack said she's so disappointed that people haven't learned from her daughter's tragic death. Love Island presenter Caroline tragically took her own life in 2020 at the age of 40.

'They don’t learn, do they Shelagh?' she began. 'All the terrible things that are happening in the world and people are going to be so hard up this Christmas and they’re still worrying about writing something awful about Meghan. I don’t get it.'

She went on: 'To take time out of your day to write what Clarkson wrote within days of her telling the world how appalling the impact is so many shades of cruel.'

'It’s brutal,' Caroline's mum continued. 'To be that full of rage about someone you don’t even know is plain odd.' Christine then referenced the age-old saying that, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

'Why write something so bad?' she asked. 'We thought when Carry died this thing about being kind, it isn’t a joke, it is a real thing.'

'If you’re going to write something about someone, let it be nice, otherwise, just leave it alone and have your own opinions in private.'

Her comments clearly struck a chord with listeners, who took to social media to commend her for speaking out. 'If you need to be reminded of the impact of words in the media – listen to Caroline Flack's mother on LBC,' one person tweeted, as someone else said: 'Anyone who thinks Clarkson’s words about Meghan Markle were anything other than disgusting needs to listen to Caroline Flack’s mother calling into @LBC.'
